The $4 million Stage 1 upgrade of Spencer Road in Thornlie earned the City of Gosnells two State engineering awards from the Institute of Public Works Engineering Australasia WA (IPWEA).

Mayor David Goode, who accepted the Excellence in Road Safety Projects Award and Best Public Works Project $2m to $5m Award (Metro), praised the City’s efforts to improve road safety.

“These awards acknowledge the great lengths taken by the City to ensure Stage 1 of the Spencer Road improvement project was well-planned and designed and involved the community at every step through detailed public consultation,” he said.

“Spencer Road is one of the City’s oldest and busiest roads, supporting around 24,000 vehicles a day, including heavy bus traffic to Thornlie train station.

“Before upgrading the section between Yale Road and Thornlie Avenue, there were more than 120 crashes over a five-year period. This four-lane undivided road was also prone to flooding and ongoing maintenance issues.

“The upgrade, which took 18 months to complete, has been terrific for motorists and the community, particularly with safer pedestrian crossing points and intersection improvements – these awards truly reflect a job well done,” the Mayor added.

Several factors set this project apart from other road projects, including the level of consultation and communication with stakeholders like Main Roads WA and the Public Transport Authority, the securing of external funding and the introduction of sustainability measures to reduce CO2 emissions and re-use and recycle road materials.

There are a number of road improvement projects being delivered by the City, including the replacement of traffic lights with a roundabout at the intersection of Fremantle Road and George Street, Gosnells and the widening of Southern River Road from Holmes Road to Bullfinch Street, Huntingdale.
