Another milestone has been reached for the $6.5 million Youth Entertainment Space (YES) under construction in the City of Gosnells, with the installation of huge, colourful steel columns and beams for the roof of the youth plaza at Sutherlands Park, Huntingdale.

Mayor Terresa Lynes, City Councillors and Member for Southern River Terry Healy were on site to view progress on the state-of-the-art facility, which will include a split-level skating plaza with rails and banks, shallow skate bowl for all skill levels and a sealed pump track for BMX and mountain bikes or scooters.

It will also boast an urban play area with hangout zone, social swings and platform seating, a rebound wall and multi-purpose area for games such as basketball, netball and futsal. The shelter will also feature external coloured LED lighting, with LED sports lighting for the youth precinct and pump track.

Mayor Terresa Lynes said the installation of the steel columns and roof beams helped to provide a clear indication of the scale of the YES structure, which would allow the space to be used year-round.

“This fantastic facility was designed in consultation with local young people and will be the first of its kind in the Perth metropolitan area,” she said.

“YES represents a significant commitment to the young people of our community, with the City of Gosnells contributing approximately $4.5 million to the project, and the State Government contributing $2 million.

“It was certainly clear during the Paris Olympics that skateboard and BMX competitions have huge appeal among people of all ages – and wouldn’t it be wonderful if the next Australian champions had their beginnings at our YES.”

Southern River MLA Terry Healy said it was great to see the YES project taking shape and he looked forward to its expected completion in 2025.

“This project is another example of the State Government working with local government to deliver positive outcomes for local communities,” he said.

“YES at Sutherlands Park will be a fantastic facility for young people in the City of Gosnells for many years to come.”

The YES project is an important part of the City of Gosnells Master Plan to transform Sutherlands Park into a one-stop location for recreation and sports for the local community.
