The Swim 4 Safety program offers families from demographics identified as high drowning risk the opportunity to participate in a drowning prevention, water awareness, and swimming program at the City of Gosnells Leisure World.

The City is eager to promote the Sport of Swimming to its wider community aiming to enhance its benefits at an early age.

This program targets families from demographics identified as high drowning risk. This includes groups that do not know how to swim and have not had the opportunity to participate in swimming lessons.

These groups include but are not limited to:

  • those who have not completed swimming lessons before,
  • families where both the parent and child are born overseas, or
  • families that identify as Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander.

This project has received grant funding from the Australian Government managed by the Australian Sports Commission.

Am I Eligible?

  • Participants must be aged 6 months - 5 years old
  • Parent/guardian must be able to participate in the water based component with child
  • Applicants must live within the City of Gosnells
  • Applicant must not have participated in swimming lessons or water awareness training previously

Limit: Maximum of 2 children per family 

Priority Consideration

All eligible applications will be considered to join the program. Priority will be given to families who have not completed swimming lessons before. Places are limited for this program.

The following criteria will be used: 

First Priority: Both parent and child born overseas, or both parent and child identifies as Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander 

Second Priority: Either parent or child are born overseas, or either parent or child identifies Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander 

Third Priority: Both parent and child are born in Australia 

Evidence must be provided for address and place of birth (examples including passport, visa, birth certificate).

Program Details

#1 Heart Beat Club Training (optional): 

Royal Life Saving WA's Heart Beat Club Training is a child safety education program designed to provide parents/guardians with the skills to provide first aid and resuscitation to babies and toddlers in and around the home, or when around water. 

Date: Friday 30 August 2024 

Time: 9:30am - 12:30pm (3 hours)

Location: Leisure World (Cnr Thornlie Avenue and Culross Avenue, Thornlie WA 6108)

Leisure World Creche is available Monday - Friday between the hours of 8:30am - 12:30pm. Please indicate this on your enrolment form if creche will be required. 

Additional dates to be provided if you cannot attend this session, keep an eye out for details. 


#2 Water Safety Awareness (compulsory): 

Participants parents/guardian MUST complete the Water Safety Awareness training before the 1st parent and child water-based sessions. 

Interactive workshop to equip participants with the knowledge to actively and safely participate in aquatic activities. 

Date: Wednesday 11 September 2024 

Time: 9:30am - 10:30am OR 10:30am - 11:30am

Location: Leisure World (Cnr Thornlie Avenue and Culross Avenue, Thornlie WA 6108)

Leisure World Creche is available Monday - Friday between the hours of 8:30am - 12:30pm. Please indicate this on your enrolment form if creche will be required. 

If you cannot attend the scheduled Water Safety Awareness training session, please indicate this on your enrolment form or contact the Community Development team to discuss alternative arrangements at info@gosnells.wa.gov.au


#3 Parent and Child Water Based Sessions (compulsory): 

Children will begin their swimming journey with the Leisure World swim program, which focuses on water familiarisation, basic water safety skills and developing elementary skills necessary for independent swimming.  

Start Date: Week of Monday 7th October 2024

Duration: 10 weekly sessions, 30 minutes per session

Note: Parent/guardian must be in the water for ALL sessions and have appropriate swimwear. Participating children will be provided with a swimming pack including goggles, towel and water bottle. 

Sessions will be booked directly with Leisure World staff. Lesson times vary on weekdays. Please indicate on your enrolment form your preferred days/times. 

Enrolment Process

I meet the criteria how do I enrol? 

1. Complete an online enrolment form

2. Email your completed form to info@gosnells.wa.gov.au

3. Wait to hear back from the Community Development team who are reviewing application forms 

Please note:

  • Completing an enrolment form does not guarantee enrolment into the program
  • The Community Development team will review your Enrolment form and accepted applications will receive written confirmation and the next steps
  • You will be contacted if additional information is required
  • There are limited spots available, priority will be given to those as described above
  • If you are not accepted for the first round of the program, there will be future rounds available

Payment Information

Cost: $42.50 (ex GST) for enrolment

  • Includes access to Heart Beat Club Training, Water Safety Awareness training and 10-weeks of parent and child water based sessions
  • The City will cover 75% of the total cost ($127.50)
